Evaluation - Question Three

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Throughout creating my media pieces I created a number of questionnaires to gain feedback on significant stages throughout the construction of my ancillary texts. This allowed me to adjust aspects of my pieces that my target audience didn't like and gain positive feedback on aspects they did like.

Music Video:

When constructing my music video I created a number of electronic, through survey monkey, and paper questionnaires to gain feedback on significant changes through my music video.
One aspect of my music video that I gained negative feedback on was the lip-syncing shots that were original outside in my first draft. I gained the feedback that this looked unprofessional and would look better if it was in a studio setting.

From my audience feedback from this change of locations I was able to learn that my peers preferred the new location and the split screen effect of the two artists. Also, filming this footage in the studio we were able to get better quality shots and also film more lip-syncing footage, something that we were told was needed to break up the performance.

Throughout our music video Tammy and I tried to create the representation of female gangsters. During our pitch we showed our peers potential costume and prop ideas and received feedback that these were good but we had to be careful to not make it cheesy. Once we completed our first draft I sent a survey monkey questionnaire alongside the link to our music video to our target audience, and gained the feedback that we portrayed this theme.

The main point raised was that the use of the bandanas and heavy eye makeup really placed emphasis on the gangster, rebel representation we were aiming to achieve.

When we first started editing our footage we added a red overlay as we tried to create the connotations of danger. We adjusted 15 seconds of footage and then played the 15 seconds of colour changed footage alongside the same 15 seconds of footage of the original footage and asked for members of our class for feedback.

They told us that they didn't like the red as much as the original as it didn't look as professional, but also due to the lighting in some shots being slightly different, the red overlay made some of the shots look lighter than others. At this point we decided to stick with the original colouring of the footage.

Once I completed my final edit of my music video I created a questionnaire to gain feedback on my video. I asked 4 questions in my questionnaire.
What was your favourite aspect of my music video?
What do you think about the camera angles and shots used in my music video?
Do you think my editing looked professional and was it effective?
What representation did you get whilst watching my music video?
I was able to ask 4 people and gained a range of responses.

Digipak:

For me to be able to make an interesting and effective digipak for my chosen artists CD I created  a survey monkey that compiled of 5 open questions. From this questionnaire I was able to learn that my use of direct address on the front panel was well liked as it created star image. I also learnt that my inside panel of the trees wasn't liked as it didn't fit with my theme. One of my questions was aimed towards font, lettering and colouring. I gained feedback that the use of the handwriting style font was liked as it looked like the artist had signed it herself. Also, because I used the same font throughout the piece it created connections and made the piece look like a package instead of just random images.

Magazine Advert:

I again created an online survey using survey monkey to send to my peers alongside the image of my magazine advert. From this survey I learnt what my audience liked about my image, text and colouring used to advertise the package of the artist. Most people liked that I used the same image on my magazine advert as well as my digipak as it created star image and similarity for the audience. Also, I adhered to a number of conventional aspects of a magazine advert such as an artist website and record label, which my audience liked as it made it look professional and advertised the artist.

I used the same text in my magazine and digipak which I received praise from my peers on as I was able to create connections and sell the artist as a package.

Refilming

Due to some unsuitable shots and our desire to capture more diverse shots Tammy and I decided to re-film.

Today Tammy and I; alongside the two actors in our media piece met to film some more footage and re-film some shots. We decided to film at our first location at Toton Sidings. The back drop of this location of abandoned trains and debris fit well with our theme and look appropriate in the background of our shots. Once we were happy with the footage we filmed we went back to college to upload and edit our new footage. Unfortunately we were unable to do this though as there was a problem with the editing software. We hope to be able to complete the editing in our next lesson.

Digipak Editing

In today's lesson I altered the image on one of my panels of my digipak.

I adjusted the contrast and colouring of the image and added a mirror effect. I think the final mirrored image is much more effective and professional looking than the single tree. And after speaking to my peers they agree the shape is artistic.

Magazine and Digipak First Draft Feedback

Digipak:

I gave my peers a questionnaire which asked for their opinion on my first draft of my digipak.

The majority of people said that they liked my back cover and the positioning of the text. But they didn't like that I repeated the same image twice. So I am planning to take some more pictures to replace the repeated image with.
The main response was that they liked my front cover image and that the font was eye catching. But I gained some feedback from my teachers that I am not meeting some key conventions of a digipak such as a barcode or record company logo. So I have decided to create and add both of these to the back panel of my digipak.

Magazine Advert:

I again created a questionnaire along a printed out picture of my magazine advert and asked my peers for some feedback.

I gained the response that using the same image on my digipak and magazine was good as it created a link and would be helpful if they were to purchase the CD from seeing the magazine advert. Also, my peers thought that my advert was a bit plain and needed brighter coloured fonts and more information such as 'available on iTunes' and maybe a social media website for the artist. I will do some more research into existing magazine adverts and add these if necessary.

Overall I am happy with the feedback I received and will make the improvements instructed by my peers and teachers.

Editing Anciliary Images

Throughout editing I have showed the images for my magazine advert and digipak to my peers to gain their feedback to see what they believed needed changing or what they thought should stay the same.

This is my original image.

I changed the brightness of the original image.

For this image I changed the contrast.

More Filming

Tammy and I decided to film some more footage as we didn't have enough shots to include within the extract. However, the other actors were unable to come to the filming session, so myself and Tammy decided to just take film each other, and have arranged to meet with the others actors at a later date that everyone is available on.

We believe that a change of scenery would be appropriate as this is often done in music videos. Therefore we moved location to Chetwynd Army Barracks. During this filming session we were able to obtain a diverse number of shots including close up shots lip-syncing scenes, which we hadn't filmed in previous filming times. These shots are crucial in a music video as it builds star image. So capturing this footage made this a very successful afternoon.

Location Two Recce Shots

We decided to have multiple locations as this is typical in the majority of music videos. Before we started filming we visited the location to map out areas we could film certain shots.

Editing

We still needed to film more footage so in today's media lesson we renamed all of our footage to make it easier to put in order and uploaded it on to Adobe Premier Pro. Due to us having a small amount of useful footage we altered the colour of our footage and tested some transitions between shots.

The image below is the original footage before we adjusted the colouring of our footage:

The image below is after altering the colour by adding a red overlay:

We have now decided to stick with the original colouring of the footage but instead change the contrast and brightness as we believe that trying to adjust all of the footage to the same colour is difficult as each image has a different original brightness.

Changes

We originally planned on having a male actor in our piece however when we started filming and editing the footage we didn't think the character fitted into the image we wanted to create. So we have decided to not use the footage with Jake and changed the story line to female only.

Day of Filming review

Tammy, the actors and I met up at around 12:00 at the filming location. Once we arrived we set up the camera and assemble the tripod. During thi whilst the actors made the final adjustment's to their costumes.
Once this was complete we refered back to our risk assessment and ensured that the area was safe for us to complete our filming.
Luckily our filming went well and we only had a few minor issue. The only issue that we had was the camera's battery went flat, however we quickly resolved this issue as we had a spare fully charged battery. After viewing our footage, the lighting was a little dark in some shots, as it was a cloudy day. This can also be resolved during the editing stage by adjusting the exposure and contrast.

Overall, we largely managed to stick to our filming schedule, resulting in us being finished and packing up the equipment at roughly 2:45pm. Although, we didn't mangage to film all the required shots. However, we have arranged to meet up again to film the necessary shots when everybody is available.

Preparation for Filming

Today after our media lesson, we collected our equipment (this included a tripod, canon 700D camera, two batteries, battery charger and SD card). I took the camera and tripod home and tested the equipment to make sure it worked properly and charged the batteries, leaving us better prepared for the day of filming as we know that all the equipment is ready to use. Also in this time I had chance to get familiar with how the tripod worked; allowing me to have better knowledge on the day of filming.

To give us more time to film our music video, we have decided to bring our filming forward to 12pm instead of the original 2:15pm as we had a free day off school that allowed all members involved in filming to be present and would allow us a longer time filming with a greater chance of filming more shots than we may have done so previously.

Purchasing props

We had to buy some props for our music video. We bought two bandanas (red and black) and two balacalavas (black) to be worn by the female actors.
When they arrived we tried them on and made any adjustments needed to ensure filming went as smoothly as possible.

For another scene we needed some bubble gum for one of the actors to pop in a close up camera shot. We purchased this from our local supermarket before taking some practice shots to ensure it created the desired effect.
Also, we did some practice shots with one of the actors sisha pens to see how much smoke was made.

Location Revisit

Tammy and I went back to the location where we were filming to take more photos and to plan which shots would be taken in each area; this made us better prepared on the day of filming.

When we first visited the location we struggled to find an easy way down to our desired location. However, when we revisited the location we found a safe and easy way to access the location due to a longer visit.

Filming Schedule

We have written a filming schedule for when we start filming on Saturday 24th. By creating this schedule we will stay on task and remember to film each of the shots required. However, this is just an estimate as some shots may take longer as they may require more retakes or we may have to adjust slots if we think that they aren't right.

Practice Makeup

We did a practice of how we want our makeup to look on our actors. We tried two different eyeshadows, one dark and a lighter one. We preferred the lighter one as it had a more feminine edge that we were trying to achieve.

The red lipstick was the right shade and will represent the characters in the way we want it to.

Costume Shots

Digipak Mockup

I made a sample of how my digipak would look if I was to use similar photography. By doing this I was hoping to ensure that my photos fitted the artists star image and promoted her brand appropriately.

Recce Shots

Tammy and I visited our locations of potential filming to try and decide which one would be suit the image we are attempting to create. Below are the pictures and the reasoning behind our choices.

We looked at Toton Sidings train track as a potential location for our music video. This area has been disused for many years and has a run down, derelect feel; which is what we are going for. Also, there are unused train carriages that we would have access to that would allow us for a good back drop for our music video.

Toton Sidings is local so is easy to get to if we needed to refilm anything and as it isn't used nobody will be moving the surrondings things will still be the same if we return to film, creating continuity within our filming.

Magazine Mock Up

I have created what I would like my magazine advert for my magazine to look like.

I have chosen to have a close up image of a girls face to represent the artist Kehlani. I want the image to represent the artist as very feminine and natural. Therefore her makeup will be very simple and basic. Also, I want her hair to be in braids as this keeps a very natural look.

The person I have chosen to do my music video is Ellie Wakelin. She is a young girl who wears very little makeup normally and has long hair that would be easy to braid. She is currently studying at school for her GCSE's but doesn't have any major commitments; this makes her a very good candidate for my magazine text.
